William (Bill) Rumsey Unsung Hero Award
Bill Rumsey had an unwavering adoration for hockey, embracing every aspect of the sport from the moment he first laced up his skates. Unexpectedly, his life was cut short in May of 2023 at the age of 53. However, his fervor for the game only intensified when his son, Kyle, embarked on his own hockey journey.
Bill and Kyle’s adventure began in the Northeast Divisions, with Kyle as a player and Bill dedicating his time to volunteer work and coaching. As time passed, Kyle eventually aged out of the Northeast Minor league. However, this didn’t put an end to their incredible partnership. Bill and Kyle united their strengths to coach the Northeast Novice selects, forming an unstoppable duo on the sidelines.
Bill’s enthusiasm, energy, and dedication shone through in his roles as both a coach and a volunteer. You could see it clearly when he was at the rink, especially when he spoke about the kids. He took immense pride in their progress and felt privileged to be a part of their growth. Witnessing the partnership between Bill and Kyle was truly inspiring.
For Bill, it was never about winning or seeking the spotlight. His focus was solely on the kids. He wanted to ensure that they had a great time, enjoyed the game, and looked forward to coming to the rink. He consistently went above and beyond what was expected, making sure that every child felt included and had a blast.
To honor Bill’s legacy, the Avalon East Recreation League, along with his family, Kelly, Kate, and Kyle, proudly presents the Unsung Hero award in his name. This award recognizes volunteers, coaches, or parents who go the extra mile to ensure that the kids have a fantastic experience, find joy in the game, and never feel left out. These remarkable individuals expect nothing in return except for the smiles on the kids’ faces every time they step onto the rink.
Northeast is now accepting nominations for this prestigious award in BIll’s honor. Nominations should include all information: name of nominee, division they coach and why you feel they are worthy of this award.
